If you're looking for a peaceful yet adventure-filled getaway in the southern Philippines, Mati City in Davao Oriental should be on your radar. Known for its stunning coastlines, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back vibe, Mati offers a perfect escape from the hustle of daily life. On a recent trip, we had the pleasure of staying at Blue Bless Beach Resort, with a scenic side trip to the famous Dahican Surf Resort. This travel experience gave us both the relaxation we craved and the adventure we didn't know we needed.
Getting to Mati
Mati City is around 165 kilometers from Davao City, about a 3–4 hour drive via the scenic Badas Viewdeck road. The journey itself is part of the experience. The road winds through lush hills and cliffside views of the Pacific Ocean, so be sure to keep your cameras ready.
Travel tip: If you're prone to motion sickness, the curvy roads might be a bit challenging, so come prepared with medication or take short stops to enjoy the views.
Blue Bless Beach Resort: A Peaceful Retreat
The resort offers several types of accommodations—whether you're traveling solo, as a couple, or in a big group, there's something for everyone. Our room was modest but clean and cozy, with all the basic amenities like air conditioning, clean restrooms, and a balcony overlooking the water.
What we loved most about Blue Bless was its laid-back atmosphere. You won’t find a party crowd here
just families, couples, and groups of friends soaking up the sun and savoring the serene surroundings. There's a large open-air dining area where you can enjoy freshly cooked meals. While the menu is simple, the seafood is fresh and delicious. Don’t miss their grilled tuna and kinilaw—it’s as local and flavorful as it gets.
There are also pools for those who want a break from the salty ocean, plus plenty of space for games, hammocks for lounging, and spots for sunset watching.
Side Trip to Dahican Surf Resort
Of course, a trip to Mati wouldn’t be complete without visiting Dahican Beach. Known for its 7-kilometer stretch of white sand and powerful waves, it’s a paradise for surfers and skimboarders. We made our way to Dahican Surf Resort, a more rugged and surf-oriented stop just a short drive from Blue Bless.
Even if you're not into surfing, Dahican is worth a visit for its natural beauty alone. The beach is lined with coconut trees, and the waves crash dramatically onto the shore. It’s a favorite spot for both professional surfers and beginners looking to catch their first wave. Lessons and board rentals are available right on the beach, so no worries if you’re a total newbie.
Dahican is also known for its Amihan Boys local skimboarders who have become a symbol of youth empowerment and sustainable tourism in Mati. You might see them in action, gliding effortlessly across the shore and doing tricks with the waves.
We spent a good part of the day just lounging on the beach, watching surfers ride the waves, and taking in the coastal breeze. It was raw, authentic, and full of life a stark contrast to the more relaxed Blue Bless, making the combination of the two spots a well-rounded Mati experience.
What to Bring and Know Before You Go
Connectivity: Mobile signal can be spotty, especially in some parts of Blue Bless. It's a good opportunity to unplug and reconnect with nature.
Cash: Bring enough cash as ATMs are limited, and not all establishments accept credit cards.
Sunscreen and Hydration: The sun can be intense, so stay protected and hydrated, especially if you're planning water activities.
Respect the Environment: Both Blue Bless and Dahican emphasize sustainability. Clean as you go and support local efforts to preserve the area’s natural beauty.
Final Thoughts
Mati is a destination that blends serenity and excitement. Whether you're floating in the calm waters of Pujada Bay or riding the waves at Dahican Beach, it offers an authentic coastal experience that’s hard to forget. Blue Bless Beach Resort gave us the relaxation we needed, while Dahican Surf Resort fed our sense of adventure.
For travelers seeking something more personal and off the beaten path, Mati is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. It’s not over-commercialized, the people are warm and welcoming, and nature is front and center.
So if you’re planning your next beach escape, consider making the journey to Mati, you might just find your new favorite spot in the Philippines.
